Temple of the Tooth Relic

Also known as Sri Dalada Maligawa. This is the most sacred and honured Buddhist temple Sri Lanka which is situated in the city of Kandy.

Overview

The Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy happens to be one of the most mesmerizing places for travellers moving towards Central Sri Lanka. Aeons ago, Kandy was known to be an ancient kingdom where lies within the confinements of a majestic palace, the tooth relic of the Lord Buddha himself. Ancient tales depict the amazing story of how the tooth relic was taken from the cremated remains of Lord Buddha following his passing away and through risky endeavours was somehow transported to this location where it remains secure today.

Getting to the Temple is easy and it has become one of those must-see destinations today in the country, visited by almost every traveller who includes Kandy in their itinerary. It is vital to understand that when visiting the Temple, that deities should be attired in a respectable and decent manner when paying their respects. Another special feature is the amazing sketches and stories etched on the high walls of a section of the Temple and if you are someone who appreciates history, then you will no doubt find this spectacle one to be cherished.

 

Another astounding piece of detail about the tooth relic is that it has been known to possess special powers for whomsoever acquires it would be bestowed with power and supremacy. The concept on how the relic is stored is similar to that of Russian dolls, where the relic is placed inside a number of repositories in varying sizes, placed one within the other.

Of course, history is abundant with amazing occurrences that brings life to an amazing true story. Princess Hemamala, the daughter of King Guhasiva of Kalinga hid the relic in her hair and somehow managed to safely transport the relic to where everyone can find it today, here in Sri Lanka.

Kandy has been long denoted as a thriving hotspot for modern day tourists. The nearby vicinity also boasts of must-see locations such as the popular Kandy City Centre or the KCC as it is being widely known, is abundant with shops and shopping outlets. Visitors can find some of the best local and global brand names here and enjoy the inviting interiors at the same time.

The National Museum of Kandy is another one of those places frequented by history buffs from both, local and foreign visitors alike. The Museum is a short walk away from the Sacred Temple. From insignia dating back to pre-European influence and royalty, the venue sure does offer a piece of haven to many an artefact. Visitors can drop by everyday between 9.00am and 5.00pm except for Sundays, Monday and public holidays.
