Rock climbers meet up? in Sri Lanka? sounds strange ha. Is it even exists? Who does rock climbing? Jayanthi ? No.. she has done Mt. Everest but not rock climbing right? If it’s rock climbing, what is bouldering? I think trad climbing is the correct word. So you mean they had a meet up in Sri Lanka? Finally ?
The simplest answer to all these questions is ‘YES’, Sri Lanka has successfully completed their first-ever rock climbers meet up on 11th March 2017 at Lanka Adventure Camp in Yakkala and looking forward to continue this event by carefully analyzing the Sri Lankan local context and its level of understanding in the field of bouldering and sports climbing since Sri Lanka is still trying to learn the ABC of this sport. The main focus of this initiative is to support, promote and enhance the awareness of bouldering and rock climbing as a sport in Sri Lanka.
What is rock climbing?
Rock climbing is an activity in which participants climb up, down or across natural rock formations or artificial rock walls. The goal is to reach the summit of a formation or the endpoint of a usually pre-defined route without falling.
Rock climbing is a physically and mentally demanding sport, one that often tests a climber’s strength, endurance, agility and balance along with mental control. It can be a dangerous activity and knowledge of proper climbing techniques and usage of specialized climbing equipment is crucial for the safe completion of routes. Because of the wide range and variety of rock formations around the world, rock climbing has been separated into several different styles and sub-disciplines.
Generally speaking, beginners will start with top roping and/or easy bouldering and work their way up to lead climbing and beyond.
Following is the photo stream of our 1st meet up where we have tried out some bouldering activities during the morning hours of the day. Hope you will enjoy it. 🙂
