Overview

For the beach bums out there, Arugam Bay has become popular amongst the locals as well as foreign tourists who travel great distances just to get a feel of those famous waves. Located on the Southeast coast of the country, Arugam Bay has witnessed tourist numbers flourish in their numbers over the past few years. Even travel frequency has shown a level of increase with buses travelling between Colombo and Pottuvil. The trip takes 7 hours with options of A/C and non-A/C buses made available.

Surfing – One of the main forms of fun activity that had turned Arugam Bay into of the most sought after locations by beach bums is surfing. Surfers from all over the world travel to the East Coast in the hope of not just experiencing the waves but to also enjoy a little bit of beach life. Surfers can easily find good surf breaks along the east coast. To get the most out of rideable waves, the best period to witness this would be between the months of April and October with wind speeds of between 8 and 11 mph each year. These breaks which help surfers get the most of the waves has attracted Surf Tourism greatly. Arugam Bay was even made popular when the area hosted the first International Surfing Competition in 2010.

Friday Nights at Whiskey Point – This point break is an ideal point for surfers who are either new to surfing or are intermediates in surfing. Located nearly 12kms from Arugam Bay, this point is especially found enjoyable during Friday Nights due to its short distance for swimmers who find it easy to swim and surf at close proximity. Another feature regarding Friday Nights spent here by surfers and beach lovers is the atmosphere. Whiskey Point is home to a cafe’ cum hotel known as SaBaBa’s which is popular among those who frequent it. However, the waves tend to get rough at times but surfers would find this point just right!

Peanut Farm Beach – A little over 4kms away from Arugam Bay, Peanut Farm is yet another point break which boasts of a sandy seabed which is not usually very crowded. The ideal travel period for surfers who flock to this beach usually do so between the months of May and October. Getting to this point is usually not easy and a taxi or tuk ride is recommended when travelling via Arugam Bay. It also holds a position as being a discreet access point and quite the secret spot when compared with other point breaks. The reason this point got its namesake was due to the belief that there really used to be, at one point, peanut farms in this location. It is one chilled out beach area and is ideal for those looking for that relaxed holiday vibe.
